Nashville Missions Coming

It's getting close to signing up for Nashville Missions! It's always on Fulton County's spring break. This year it's April 1st to 7th. I should have signup sheets for Nashville around the beginning of January, once all the madness of Winter Retreat is over.

Youth Display

As many of you likely have noticed, there's a display table set up outside the sanctuary in the hallway. I've put up pictures from recent events and I'll be updating that thing as time goes on. The table will also have forms, such as for Winter Retreat, and other info in paper form. If you have any suggestions as to what else I could put on that table, I'm all ears.

November Library Book Recommendations

There are TWO sets of recommendations for this month.

Sometimes when studying the Bible you run across terms that you may know, but wonder what meanings or significances you may be missing out on. For example, what does ancient burial look like? What did they do? What are the difference nuances of of the word hesed that is translated something along the lines of God's "loving-kindness"? There are a lot of odd sounding animals in the Bible that we aren't used to in the states. What's a pygarg? Or maybe you come across a name of a person or place and want to get some quick background. There's a balm in Gilead, but where or what is Gilead? What's with the different gates in Jerusalem and what do they mean? Who are all the Marys in the New Testament? Why does the city of Dan keep being mentioned?

If you study the Bible you'll come across these words that you probably only need a quick explanation of without a whole essay. Bible dictionaries really help with this dilemma, because if you keep reading and skip over that information you may end up with a completely wrong interpretation of the passage. The library has THREE illustrated Bible dictionaries. Why three? Although there is a lot of overlapping of articles, there is some variation between the three about certain things they cover. Some of the less common terms may not show up in all three but only one or two. Also of the articles they do cover, each has some differences in what things they cover about their entries. One dictionary may emphasize this about a word but leave out other things while the other dictionary may do the opposite. And lastly, there are pictures. These are illustrated dictionaries and they have different pictures or illustrations of things.

So if you get stuck studying the Bible or get confused, take a few minutes and go to the church library between service and Sunday school or after service (until 3pm) to go look it up!

Do Hard Things was written by a pair of teenagers that want to challenge the popular assumption that teenagers can’t accomplish significant things. Popular culture presses upon young people (and not so young people) the purpose of life is just to indulge one’s own pleasures and not to expect much out of life. It was only recently in human history that teenagers were called “adolescents”, which meant they were not expected to accomplish anything of lasting value or meaning. Today’s teens just spend money on temporary things and look for a good time. Just do your homework and the rest of the time just have fun. Wait until you are an adult before trying to do something that has any meaning. Do Hard Things begins with the story (and then tells dozens of stories) of teens that felt this was unbiblical and did not bring glory to God. They rebelled against the onset of teenage malaise and decided to do hard things for God. They wanted to accomplish something during this crucial time in their lives that would last and impact society for the better. I’m definitely not a teenager and haven’t been one for a long time but this book was great motivation to remind me to make sure I strive for things that may not be easy, but will bring glory to God and leave a lasting mark. This book spends time presenting their view on teens accomplishing hard things, plenty of examples of teenagers that have accomplished great things, and practical steps in getting started with your own hard things. I highly recommend this book to anyone, teenager or not, who wants to do more in life than just live.

October Book Review - The Search for Significance

For the month of October, during our Friday night programs, we've been talking about personal value. What makes someone or someone else valuable? What gives you meaning? The Search for Significance was a really big help for me when I was in a really bad depression. I was looking for my personal value in all sorts of outside things that society told gave me worth. Our value is based upon what God thinks of us as opposed to what the world thinks. This book helps break down a lot of misconceptions about what gives us value. Often times these things can be ideas we didn't even realize we had. Half of this book is like a regular book that you read through. The second half is a workbook that do along with your reading. You answer questions and think through things that you read in the first half. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with feelings of self-worth.

If you are interested in reading this book, there is already a copy of the regular edition and a Student edition (which is geared to teens) in the church library. If you don't have a library card, you can print out THIS FORM, fill it out, and when you go to the church library give if to them. The library is open between Sunday school and service on Sundays and after service to 3:00pm.

Sunday School Teachers Needed

Hello! We are looking for Sunday school teachers. We're also doing some stuff to broaden our pool. Starting next quarter there will be the option of team teaching, where two teachers are in charge of the same class. That way an inexperienced teacher can be paired up with a veteran to help them learn the ropes. Also this allows some leeway in time commitment. If one teacher is out for a little, the partner can take over the whole class and vice versa. If you are interested in teaching Sunda school, please contact Mrs. Christina Sun ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Email List Signup

We have a mass email system set up to send out updates and information to parents, students, and other people that may be interested. We have a ton of emails from having students fill out forms. Not all parent and student emails are on the list, however, for a variety of reasons. We've only had these signup sheets on Friday nights so far so if you come Sundays only, we don't have your information quite yet. If you would like to be on the email list, I've set up a sign up on the lower right hand side. Just look at the right side of the page and scroll down until you see it. Put in your first name, last name, and email address and you'll be added.

Hope Store Volunteering (10.29.11)
--
Hello NaCl Youthgroup!
We do not have our regular youth group service this Friday (10.28.11) because of our service project Saturday. The Hope Store sells donated goods with the intention that all their profits go to ministries that help people and spread the gospel. We will be helping around the store (cleaning up, packaging, etc.).
For those who are interested or have questions, please contact Jonathan Hsiehbefore Saturday (we are in need of volunteers!). We will all meet up at church promptly at 12:30 to carpool, and will be getting back around 5:30. The store is about 10-15 minuets away from the ACCCN's location. Please eat a full lunch before coming.

SEE YOU ALL THERE!
